Broad Support Expressed for Creating "Blue Ribbon Commission" to Review Nuclear Waste Policies

President Bill Clinton is being urged by the approximately 40 organizations of the Military Production Network, and 40 members of the United States Congress and Senate, to convene a "Blue Ribbon Commission" to conduct a top-to-bottom review of high and low-level nuclear waste policies.

"The United States and many other countries are awash in long- lived radioactive materials... At present, we have no comprehensive approach to managing all of these materials over the generations that they will exist." -- Daniel A. Dreyfus, director of DOE's Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management

"Increasing DOE's budget for the radioactive waste program without making the commitment to an orderly and economic phase-out of waste production is exactly the wrong approach." -- Martin Gelfand, Research Director for the Safe Energy Communication Council
